I TOLD MY FATHER

Pierce Peter Brandt, vocal  Scott Warner, piano

I told my father I loved him today

Don’t know what compelled me to

I told my father I loved him

Despite all that we’ve been through

The life he expected of me

Wasn’t one I could live

The father I wanted him to be

Wasn’t what he could give

So many years being strangers

Turning gold into lead

So much noise, between men and their boys

So much that never gets said

But I told my father I loved him today

He looked at me with surprise

And all the years - the battles, the fears

Melted before my eyes

I told my father I loved him today

And for all that we’ve been through

He looked me right in the eye and said

“I love you, too.”

Like an easy thing to do...

So tell somebody you love them today

Doesn’t matter what you’ve been through

Tell somebody you love them

Like it’s the easiest thing to do

Because maybe they’ve been waiting, too.
